HILOmat

HILOmat is easy to install in a new or renovated house and apartment. Please note. A qualified electrician should carry out all electrical works.

Step 1. Measure the floor area free from furniture or equipment for a HILOmat installation. The HILOmat should be slightly smaller than the measured heating area (m2). Do not install the HILOmat under the bathroom equipment (toilets, showers)or furniture avoiding HILOmat damage during bathroom equipment installation.

Step 2. Make a channel (10×10 mm) in the floor and wall towards the thermostat connection box. Insert the thermostat sensor into a corrugated pipe, seal the end of the corrugated pipe and place it in the channel.

Step 3. Clean the floor, check the resistance of HILOmat. HILOmat resistance must be the same as indicated on the label, then install the HILOmat.

Step 4. Lay the HILOmat from the wall and move towards the opposite wall. To turn and go back, cut the HILOmat mesh, do not cut the RED cable. Repeat it until the entire floor surface is covered with HILOmat.

Step 5. Turn the HILOmat around obstacles by loosening the RED heating cable from the mesh. Do not damage the RED cable!

Step 6. Two options for glueing the tiles on top of the installed HILOmat: apply tile adhesive and glue the tiles or cover the HILOmat with a self-levelling compound, let it dry and then glue the tiles.

No. Do not trim the HILOmat cable, as the resistance of the heating mat will change, the raised power will overheat and damage the HILOmat. Therefore, it is essential to measure the heated area accurately. The HILOmat should be installed in the free floor area, excluding the bathroom furniture and equipment. Please select the HILOmat size equal or smaller to the measured free floor area. Contact your HILO Heat representative if you have any questions.

The HILOmats should be installed where both HILOmats power cables are connected to the thermostat’s installation box. The total power of heating mats should not exceed 16A or 3.2 kW.

The power cables are colour marked. Connect cables of the same colour (brown to brown, blue to blue), and then connect the thermostat. The protective (braided) screen of HILOmat should be connected with another protective screen via clamp; then connect it to a power cable (yellow-green).

HILO Heat does not recommend installing HILOmats under the toilet, bins, bath and shower base or kitchen cabinets. Furniture and bathroom equipment reduce the heat transfer. In addition, heating installed under the toilet bins often results in an undesirable odour.

The width of the HILOmat is 50 cm, and we recommend installing them side by side.

The heating cable end termination (end seal) is the connection of two heating cable conductors.

Yes. HILOmat 150 can be installed on the USB board.

Before installing the HILOmat, apply a thin layer of tile adhesive on the USB board. Then install the HILOmat 150 and glue the tiles.

Yes. HILOmat 150 can be installed on old tiles. Before installing the HILOmat, clean well and degrease the old tiles.

Thermal insulation is required on the base of the floor if it was not installed during construction. Thermal insulation is not needed when floor heating is installed on the second or other levels of the residential house.

Do not trim the HILOmat cable! The extra length of HILOmat should be installed in the free space of a room. Release the RED heating cable from the mesh and place it on the free floor area next to the HILOmat. Note that cutting or crossing the RED HILOmat cable is strictly forbidden.

Replace the HILOmat with a smaller size HILOmat. It is strictly prohibited to cut and shorten the HILOmat heating cable.

When installing the HILOmat, keep the minimum distance of 5-10 cm from the wall.

A qualified electrician can repair the HILOmat.

The HILOmats for indoor heating is not suitable for outdoor use.

Outdoor heating mats for ice and snow melting with an output of 300W / m² are used for outdoor installation.

HILØ HEAT recommends installing HILOmats under different flooring and controlling them with two separate thermostats.

The floor surface should be clean, free of dust and sharp things. Floor priming is not necessary, but it improves the adhesion of the HILOmat to the floor surface.

HILOflex

The HILOfast installation tape is necessary to fix the heating cable at a C-C distance, to install the heating cable evenly in the room, and ensure even heating distribution through the area.

The distance between installation tapes should be 0,3-0,5m.

The minimal distance between the cables should be 5 cm. For example, when installing the HILOflex 10 heating cable, the distance usually is 8-10 cm, and for the HILOflex 18, the distance is 12-15 cm. The distance between heating cables depends on the installed power output per square meter.

The C-C distance between the heating cables should be calculated as follows:

C-C = Heated area (m²)/ Cable length (m)
C-C= 10 m² / 69m = 0,145m = 14,5cm.

The HILOfast tape has hooks with a distance of 2 cm, so after calculating the distance between the cables, you can calculate to which hook the heating cable should be attached.

The heating cable HILOflex 10 and HILOflex 18 differ in power output per meter. The HILOflex 10 heating cable output is 10W/m and HILOflex 18 – 18W/m.

No, the heating cable thickness does not affect the heating of the cable. Thin floor heating cables are “new generation” heating cables with temperature resistant fluoropolymer insulation. They are stronger, flexible, durable, lighter and faster, and easier to install.

The heating cable has a braided copper screen and an additional aluminium foil, so it stays in the folded position when bent. As a result, installing the heating cable with “memory” is easier and faster, also it saves installation time and cost.

Usually, one heating cable is not enough in a large area or room. Therefore, two or three heating cables can be installed and connected to one or more thermostats.

Two cables can be connected to one thermostat, but the total power of heating cables should not exceed 14 A – 16A, the power controlled by the thermostat. The total installed power should not exceed 3.2kW – 3.6kW accordingly.

A thin floor heating cable is better than a thick one. A thin heating cable is a new generation cable, where each conductor core is insulated individually with a high-temperature fluoropolymer. These cables are of high quality, durable and reliable.

Meanwhile, the thick heating cable insulation is polyethene, which maintains only lower temperatures.

Yes, it is possible to extend the connection cable. For example, the connection cable can be extended up to 20 meters with 3×2,5mm² power cable.

Yes, the floor temperature sensor cable can be extended up to 50 m with a copper cable of not less than 2×15 mm². Please contact the HILO Heat specialist if you need to extend the roof and ground sensors.

The maximum thickness depends on the surface of the flooring:

  • for wood surfaces – 20-30 mm;
  • for laminates – standard thicknesses according to their technical characteristics;

Usually, there are no restrictions on tile and carpeting thickness.

Please note that most laminates and carpeting are designed to use for heated floors.

HILOeco

Activate the thermostat by pressing any of the three buttons. The backlight will be lit. Hold the middle button for 8 seconds until the factory reset menu appears.

To deactivate the child lock, you need to hold pressed the “up” and “down” buttons simultaneously until the child lock symbol disappears from the display.

To activate the child lock, you need to hold and press the “up” and “down” buttons at the same time, then the “lock” child lock symbol will appear on the display.

The HILOeco thermostat has a child lock that will allow you to lock the thermostat settings.

The HILOeco thermostat has a frost protection function that can be selected in the thermostat menu settings.

The HILOeco thermostat has a pre-programmed timer function that allows you to select 4 or 2 heating modes.

When the floor heating is on, the three-wave symbol is displayed in the upper right corner of the thermostat, if it is not displayed, the floor is not currently heated.

If you want to choose, which temperature sensor to use yourself, you need to select it in the thermostat menu settings.

If you do not connect the floor temperature sensor, the thermostat will automatically switch to the room temperature sensor and control the heating system according to the room sensor data.

The HILOeco thermostat has floor and room temperature sensors.

E0: Internal fault. The heating is shut off.

E1: Built-in sensor fault. The sensor application is changed to C (regulator).

E2 (E-5E): External Sensor Error. (The sensor is either damaged, has shorted or disconnected). The sensor application is changed to C (regulator) If rF is used – the sensor application is changed to r (internal room sensor).

E5 (1-OH): Internal Overheat Internal overheating. If the E5 error persists, please contact your installer.

HILOreg

You can check the floor temperature sensor by measuring its resistance. Resistance values depending on temperature are given in the table.

NTC 12K Ω@250 Celsius
*Celsius * Farenheit ΩOmh

When the floor is heated, the red light in the upper right corner of the thermostat lights up, if the light does not appear, the floor is not heated.

When the floor is heated, the red light in the upper right corner of the thermostat lights up, if the light does not appear, the floor is not heated.

A common reason why the HILOreg thermostat is not working is an incorrectly inserted temperature control wheel, a non-adjusted setting of 0 on the temperature scale with a dash of the adjusting wheel.

HILOwood

Thin Steico underfloor ekopor layer or hardwood insulation can be used under HILOwood mats.

No. the HILOwood heating mat cannot be trimmed.

We recommend using the HILOeco thermostat with floor sensors. The floor temperature sensor controls the set temperature in the room, protecting the floor from overheating.

The thermostat is always required to be used with a HILOwood aluminium heating mat. We recommend using the HILOeco thermostat with floor sensors.

HILOwood mat should be connected with aluminium foil sheets side by side, connecting the HILOwood mat into one whole heating layer.

HILOwood aluminium foil sheets can be replaced with adhesive aluminium tape. The adhesive aluminium tape is thinner than the HILOwood foil sheets, so you need to glue two layers on each side of the HILOwood mat.

Additional HILOwood aluminium foil sheets are used to connect the HILOwood heating mat to a common electrical circuit. With aluminium sheets, connected aluminium foil serves as an earthling screen.

HILOwood heating mat dry installation does not require a concrete or adhesive layer. On the clean floor surface, you will need to apply a layer of hardwood or thin Steico underfloor ekopor. When the hardwood or Steico ekopor is applied, then install the HILOwood aluminium heating mat. Then your floor heating is read for laminate or wood boards flooring.

The resistance of the HILOwood heating mat is measured between the power cable conductors and the screen.

The resistance between the conductors should be of the same value as indicated on the mat label (Ω). The resistance between the screen and the conductors must be at least 0.5 MΩ.

No, the HILOwood heating mat cannot be used with carpet flooring.

No, the HILOwood heating mat cannot be used under the tiles.

Laminate or wood/parquet boards (without metal clips) can be installed on top of the HILOwood aluminium heating mat.

Several HILOwood aluminium heating mats can be installed in the room, but their power should not exceed 3.2kW.

Several HILOwood heating mats can be installed in the same room by connecting them in parallel to the thermostat. The total power of the HILOwood heating mats should not exceed 3.2kW.

HILOwood aluminium heating mat is designed for dry installation under the wood/parquet board. The heating system is installed in the following way: install hardwood insulation on the floor, then lay HILOwood aluminium heating mat and finish flooring with wood/parquet boards.

Note: laminate or wood/parquet boards with metal clips cannot be used.

HILOwood aluminium heating mat is designed for dry installation under the laminate. The heating system is installed in the following way: install hardwood insulation on the floor, then lay HILOwood aluminium heating mat and finish flooring with laminate.

Note: laminate with metal clips cannot be used.

HILOwood aluminium heating mat can be installed in the bathroom under laminate flooring or wood board flooring by dry installation. HILOwood heating mat cannot be installed under the tiles.

We recommend laying hardwood or Steico underfloor ekopor layer under HILOwood aluminium heating mat.

Yes, the HILOwood heating mat can be cut and rotated. Note: Do not cut or damage the heating cables.

HILOmirror

There is no need for a thermostat for mirror heating. Mirror heating is used for a short time when taking a shower or bath to prevent the mirror from fogging. Mirror heating foil can be connected to the bathroom lighting, bath mirror lighting or by installing a separate switch.

Mirror heating foil is designed to heat the mirror and meets the technical requirements for this purpose. It is covered with laminated plastic, so it is not affected by moisture and does not damage the mirror.

The following powers are available:

HILOmirror 25, 25W,
HILOmirror 50, 50W,
HILOmirror 100, 100W.

One side of the HILOmirror heating foil is covered with glue, so you can simply stick it to the surface of the mirror and connected it to the bathroom or mirror lighting.

The HILOmirror foil should cover most of the mirror surface. However, if the mirror is too large, we recommend heating part of the mirror with one HILOmirror foil or two separate HILOmirror foils.

When heating one mirror with several HILOmirror foils, they should be connected in parallel.

HILOmirror foils are the following dimensions:

HILOmirror 25, 274 x 574mm,
HILO mirror 50, 524 x 519mm,
HILOmirror 100, 524 x 1004mm.

Bathroom HILOmirror heating does not need any control. It turns on and off with the bathroom light or mirror light switch.

HILOmirror foil can be attached to the other side of the hanging mirror when the mirror is hung on the wall and connected to the bathroom lighting.

HILOmirror foil is attached to the other side of the mirror and connected to the bathroom lighting.

HILOpipe

HILOpipe a self-regulating heating cable in unheated rooms should be installed on the pipe. The self-regulating heating cable has to be attached to the pipe through all cable lengths with aluminium tape and each 25 cm heating cable should be fixed with aluminium tape around the pipe. Then, cover the pipe with thermal insulation.

You can protect the pipes from freezing by inserting the HILOpipe heating cable inside the pipe through the metal sleeve.

The pipe is installed with a plumbing tee according to the pipe diameter. The tee should be D20 or D25 in diameter. Install HILOpipe metal fitting D20/25 into the pipe, screw the metal fitting into a tee and seal it.

When installing the HILOpipe cable on a metal pipe, first you need to install the HILOpipe cable along the pipe length and attach it with aluminium tape to the pipe through all cable length. When the cable is fixed on the pipe cover it with thermal insulation to give maximum heat to the pipe.

When installing the HILOpipe cable on a plastic pipe, first, you need to glue the adhesive aluminium tape along the pipe. Then, installed HILOpipe cable by attaching it to the pipe with a second layer of adhesive aluminium tape on top of the cable. Two layers of aluminium foil extend the heated surface and maximize the heat transfer from the heating cable to the plastic pipe.

You have to use the metal D20/25 HILOpipe fitting for the pipe. Screw the metal D20/25 HILOpipe fitting into a tee and seal it.

Yes, we recommend using a HILOpipe heating cable with metal D20/25 HILOpipe fitting for the heating cable installation in the pipe.

The minimum thickness of the thermal insulation should not be less than 10mm; the thicker the insulation; the lower the consumption for electrical heating.

It is necessary to install thermal insulation on top of the pipe after the heating cable is installed.
